How to decarboxylation cannabis
How to decarboxylation cannabis – if you have ever been interested in making your own edibles, you might have come across the fact that the first step in the recipe is ‘decarbing the cannabis’. But what exactly does ‘decarbing’ mean and why is it necessary?
What is decarboxylation and why is it needed?
Consumption of raw cannabis alone does not produce any psychoactive effect. Yes, this means that everything that is portrayed in movies about how you eat a bag of cannabis and get super high is complete bullshit. Decarboxylation is the process that must take place for the psychoactive components of cannabis to become active and produce effects. Decarboxylation, or the prolonged exposure of cannabis to heat, occurs immediately after smoking marihuana, when marihuana reacts to high temperatures. However, if you want to prepare edibles, oils or tinctures, you must decarboxylate the herb before you try to use it for cooking, otherwise the THC will not adhere to the fatty solutions and will not be psychoactive.
Decarboxylation
The cannabinoids contained in the trichomes of raw cannabis flowers contain an additional carboxyl ring (COOH), which is referred to as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid or THCA. THCA is a non-psychoactive component that can only be activated to THC after raw hemp has undergone decarboxylation. Exposing cannabis to heat for a period of time will break down the cannabinoids and convert THCA to THC. In the case of smoking, this is an almost instantaneous process, as smoking causes immediate combustion (high temperature/short time), but knowing how to decarboxylate cannabis without this process requires a different way of burning THCA.
Precise temperature for decarbonisation
The ideal temperature for decarboxylation starts at 250 °F (121.1 °C), and your flowers need about 30 to 45 minutes for the decarboxylation to work. Depending on how much cannabis you decarboxylate at once, the full decarboxylation process may take longer. You can also decarboxylate for longer at lower temperatures, starting at 102 °C (217.5 °F); this will help preserve the terpenes that ensure the integrity of the special aromas and flavours of the marihuana. If the temperature exceeds 148.9 °C (300 °F), the integrity of the cannabis and the decarburisation process will be lost, resulting in a bitter taste and a more sedate, less psychoactive experience. So be patient and keep temperatures lower.
Home decarbonization
If you want to consume pot by methods other than smoking and still get the psychoactive effects, it is important to learn how to decarbonise pot at home. There are various methods of decarburising cannabis, all of which will produce the same desired result: heating the herb so that it can be used to make your own meals, tinctures or topicals.
In an oven
The easiest is decarbonization in the oven. It requires the fewest steps and the least equipment; it is also one of the fastest methods of decarbonization. However, it can cause a lot of smell in the kitchen, so it may not be the best option if you’re trying to be discreet.
Equipment
To decarbonization the marihuana in the oven you will need:
- Baking tray
- Aluminium foil or parchment paper
- marihuana
Instructions
To effectively decarb your weed in the oven, follow these instructions and set the oven temperature correctly; get a thermometer to be sure.
- Set the oven to 225°F (about 107°C) and place a baking sheet in the centre.
- Crumple foil or parchment paper into a ball and then flatten it on the baking tray; this will help keep the marihuana from directly touching the bottom.
- Break the hemp into pieces about the size of a grain of rice. Place them lightly on the baking tray and place another tray on top. This is to avoid direct contact with the heat.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the marihuana from the oven and let it cool for 30 minutes. You can use it immediately or save it for later use!
In a mason jar
Decarboxylation of cannabis in a jar is one of the best decarboxylation methods because it helps preserve the cannabis terpenes, which have their own benefits and help preserve the flavour and aroma of the marihuana.
Equipment
To decarbonate cannabis in a jar you will need:
- Jar with lid
- Baking tray
- Kitchen towel
- Marijuana
- Oven gloves
Instructions
Be careful when handling jars and again make sure the oven is properly tempered.
- Set the oven to 220-240°F (104-115.5°C) and place a rack in the middle of the oven.
- Crush the marihuana into pieces the size of grains of rice, place them in a jar and screw the lid on slightly.
- Place a damp kitchen towel on a baking tray and place the jar on it. This serves to stabilise the jar once it has been placed in the oven.
- Place the baking tray in the oven and bake for 60 minutes. Periodically remove the jar from the oven with oven mitts and shake it lightly to distribute the weed evenly.
- After 60 minutes, remove the jar and allow to stand for 30 minutes. The weed is suitable for immediate use or can be stored for later.
Sous-Vide
Sous-vide decarbonisation is the most advanced way to decarbonise cannabis at home. With sous-vide technology, you can consistently achieve the ideal temperature, preserve terpenes and the process is virtually odourless.
Equipment
To decarb your weed by sous-vide, youâre going to need:
- Immersion circulator
- Container for immersion circulator (plastic tub, large pot, etc.)
- Vacuum sealer or Ziploc-style freezer bags
- Cannabis
Directions
The use of the sous-vide method guarantees the decarbonisation of the cananbis at a constant temperature, ensuring an almost even distribution of decarboxylation throughout the batch.
- Fill the container with hot water and place the immersion circulator in it. Set the circulator to 95 °C (203 °F). (It is important to follow the detailed instructions for your immersion circulator in this step).
- Grind the hemp finely. As the temperature will be regulated, you don’t have to worry about overheating the marihuana or destroying the terpenes, aroma or THC.
- Use the vacuum cap or water exchange method, if using a plastic Ziploc bag, to seal the cannabis in the bag of your choice.
- Place the sealed bag in a water bath for 90 minutes.
- After 90 minutes, remove the bag and allow it to cool for 15-20 minutes. Your cannabis will be ready for immediate use or you can save it for later.
The final explanation of decarboxylation
Although the decarboxylation process may seem daunting at first, it is actually very simple and can easily be done at home. Decarboxylation is arguably the most important step in the edible marihuana production process. It is also a fascinating process that provides a deeper insight into the complexity of the cannabis plant and how much we still have to learn about its structure, functions and various components.
