What is CBN?

Cannabinol (CBN) is a phytocannabinoid that is present in very small amounts in cannabis plants before harvest, most strains contain around 1–2% by weight. CBN is created when tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is exposed to UV light and oxygen. It is therefore not possible, for example, to produce a strain rich in CBN. Cannabinol was the first cannabinoid substance identified by scientists (by W.R. Dunstan and T.A Henrin in 1898) in its pure form. For several years before the discovery of THC, it was believed that this cannabinoid was the main active component of cannabis and is responsible for its psychoactive effect. In recent times, CBN has been considered the enemy because it is the result of the degradation of THC in cannabis flowers during prolonged and improper storage. Now we discovering that even such ‘degraded’ flowers still have their uses as a source of cannabinol.

How marijuana CBN is formed and how it can be obtained

CBN can be purchased in the same form as CBD, most commonly in the form of oils,tinctures, dry flowers, gelatine, etc. CBN flowers can be made by anyone from THC flowers, simply by improper storage, which is exposure to UV (sun) light and oxygen. If you’ve ever smoked weed that hasn’t been stored properly, or has been stored for several years, you’ve already tried CBN flower.

Medical use of CBN

Research studies on CBN are fewer and inconclusive. There is still much to discover and verify about cannabinol. However, so far we know that it CBN mildly antibacterial, psychoactive, sedative and helps with anxiety. Cannabinol also affects the muscular system, helping with muscle pain and slows the progression of ALS and probably has many other uses, which are not known yet.

Specific treatment uses of CBN :

• CBN against insomnia – Cannabinol has sedative properties that promote sleep.
• Pain relief with CBN – studies on mice show that together with CBD, it can reduce pain in people with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other muscle and joint diseases.
• Prevention against ALS – Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis attacks the spinal cord and brain cells. In a study conducted in 2005, participants received small doses of cannabinol for three months. Researchers noted that CBN could delay ALS and protect users against it.

Final word

Although we do not have enough information and there are not enough studies on cannabinol, it is safe to say that it is a cannabinoid that has its uses.
