Cannabis beneficial acids and how they work

Fertilisers are not always a guarantee of a good harvest. Acids are also good for plants and today you will learn more about them.

cannabis plant and acids

The word acid conjures up a bit of negative imagery, so in conjunction with cannabis plants we expect more trouble. But the opposite is true. Organic acids are a natural part of plants. They function as plant hormones or vitamins, for example. Especially if you are growing indoors, your plants (marijuana included) may need something like a “dietary supplement”. Find out what acids you can supplement your plants with and how to do it in this article.

Abscisic acid

It has the abbreviation ABA and is also called abscisin II or dormin. It is an inhibitory phytohormone. That means it slows down the growth of the cannabis plant until the dormant season. Its levels increase when the plant is exposed to negative environmental influences such as drought, frost, rapid temperature changes and heavy metals in the soil.

How abscisic acid works:

  • ABA stops cell division when it’s freezing outside. This stops the hemp plant from growing.
  • When ABA is produced in the marijuana buds located at the top of the stem, its presence instructs the cells in the leaves to start forming scales. This keeps the cannabis buds protected when it’s cold outside.
  • Conversely, ABA does not slow down root growth, but accelerates it. This is to give the plant more opportunities to draw water and nutrients from the poorly nourishing soil.

In summary, abscisic acid helps the plant to withstand drought and abnormal conditions. If you supply it to the plant during cultivation, it will be more productive and stronger. For this reason, ABA is included in many fertilizers.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)

Plants need vitamin C because it increases their ability to cope with UV and drought stress. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant and protects plants from ozone, which is formed from oxygen and pollutants in the air during strong sunlight. Ozone can permeate the leaves of a plant and destroy them unless the antioxidant present reacts. Vitamin C also helps keep nitrates, needed for good growth, in plant tissues.

Plants can make vitamin C themselves. However, you can supply them with it from purchased products, which often contain added fructose, molasses and other sugars. Apply in the last few weeks of growth. With ascorbic acid, the plant will grow heavier, denser buds and the resulting product will have a heavier weight and more intense flavor.

Vitamin C supplementation is essential, especially if you are growing hemp plants indoors so that they are exposed to very intense light and heat.

Salicylic acid

It is a phytohormone that helps with photosynthesis, respiration and ion uptake. It also mediates the plant’s defense against pathogens by producing proteins and other defense metabolites.

Salicylic acid promotes seed germination, flowering and buds ripening. However, too high a concentration can have the opposite effect.

Supplementing with salicylic acid will increase the hemp plant’s systemically acquired resistance. This means that the plant will have greater defences, reducing the need for pesticides. Salicylic acid is applied as a spray, by soaking or by adding it to compost or root stimulators.

Folic acid (vitamin B9)

Its function is to help plants make DNA and RNA, which are nucleic acids that transmit genetic information to plant cells. In addition, folic acid facilitates the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. In short, folic acid will make your cannabis plants bigger, bushier and healthier.

Folic acid can be fed to the plants with a watering can or spray. It breaks down quickly when the plant is exposed to extreme light. So plants grown indoors will definitely benefit from getting some extra.
