How to recognise a good marijuana ?
At first glance, it may not be easy to distinguish really good quality “grass” from poor quality grass. In any case, the key characteristics that separate good marijuana from bad are the smell, appearance and texture of the buds. It doesn’t matter if they are CBD varieties or not. In this article, we’re going to look at how to recognize good weed without tasting it.
What to look for:
1. Smell
Good marijuana grown and processed to the highest standards typically has an intense and pleasant aroma. There are a number of terms for the types of aromas that high-quality cannabis gives off, including skunk, diesel or pine. The common denominator is that good smelling cannabis is distinctive, pungent and characteristic. The stronger the aroma, the greater the likelihood of a good smoking experience.
However, some varieties can be deceiving with their at first impression subtle scent, which is earthy and hard to grasp. This is what some strains with the kush pedigree have, yet they can be first class stuff.
2. Appearance
The first thing you’ll probably notice is the colour of the buds. Typical is green in many shades, but it should not be a bright green. Well-dried marijuana buds have more muted shades. Premium marijuana can surprise with a whole range of colours and red, blue or purple shades, sometimes really deep purple, are desired. But it should never be an outright grey, brown or light brown colour. This indicates mouldy, light-damaged or old flowers.
Also typical is the presence of orange-brown hairs – these are mature scars. If the buds are harvested prematurely and the scars are still white, after drying the point is grey rather than brown.
Another important visual indicator of good marijuana is the amount of trichomes. These are the microscopic, shiny crystal sponges on the surface of the buds that contain the compounds responsible for the smell, taste and effects of cannabis. The more trichomes you can see with the naked eye, the better. If you don’t have perfect eyesight, use a magnifying glass to get a good look.
Watch out for very dark to black canes, this may indicate mould at harvest time.
3. Touch
A really good quality buds should be sticky and slightly spongy when you touch it or squeeze it gently between your fingers. The stems should crack when bent and the stick should break relatively easily, but be careful – it must not be too dry. Over-dried buds are ‘crunchy’ and crumble and fall apart easily.
At the same time, the buds should not be too wet or soft, as they are more likely to develop mould or rot.
4. Structure of the bud
The structure and the effect may not usually have much in common. The cones of sativa varieties that tend to be light and fluffy, while indica tend to be more firm and dense in structure. Extremely fluffy buds may be a sign that the plant has not been grown in sufficient light and has not reached its potential.
