Hemp sugar, marijuana-infused sugar or canna-sugar, is a great alternative to other cannabis ingredients such as hemp butter. It’s easy to make at home with just an oven and strong alcohol.

You may have heard of hemp butter or milk. Hemp sugar is the newest ingredient to try when making hemp goodies

Additional information :

Don’t let the nomenclature fool you. Cannabis sugar is often referred to in English as “cannasugar”, which is a similar word to “sugar cane” or “sucre de canne”. However, this is the English or French name for cane sugar.

What is hemp sugar good for?

Cannabis sugar is, as the name suggests, sugar infused with cannabinoids from marijuana. It is a highly variable, sweet ingredient that can be used in many recipes. It makes it easy to add cannabinoids to almost any food.

The advantage of hemp sugar over milk or butter is that it is better suited to people with dietary restrictions. Marijuana sugar can be enjoyed by people who are, for example, allergic to milk protein or lactose intolerant, or who need to limit fat.

In addition, the preparation of cannabis sugar at home is very easy. You’ll need more ingredients than for hemp butter, but once you understand the principle, it’s almost effortless to prepare.

How to cook cannabis?

Before you start preparing dishes with marijuana, it is good to understand the basic principles.

  • All recipes include decarboxylation of cannabis. This means you will bake the raw cannabis buds on low heat for at least 35 minutes to activate the cannabinoids.
  • All you need is a little. Don’t waste money by putting too much cannabis in your marijuana dishes. When ingested in food, the effect of cannabis is stronger than when smoked, so you won’t need to consume as much for the desired effect.
  • Cannabinoids degrade at high temperatures. Prolonged exposure of cannabis to high temperatures leads to a change from THC to CBN, which is not desirable if you desire its effects. Try to keep baking or frying times as short as possible when preparing cannabis edibles.

How to serve hemp sugar?

You can use hemp sugar in the same recipes as hemp butter. Or be more creative and add an unconventional twist to traditional treats.

  • Sweeten your tea or coffee with hemp sugar.
  • Add it to your morning porridge.
  • Mix up a smoothie.
  • Sprinkle hemp sugar on sweets like doughnuts or cake.

Before you start, choose a suitable variety and calculate how much you will need. Also, prepare high-proof alcohol. In the US, Everclear is recommended, but in the Czech Republic, strong moonshine, food grade alcohol or the Polish vodka Spirytus, which is 95% alcohol, will do. The best sugar will be crystal.

  • Coarsely, not powdered, grind the marijuana. Spread the resulting mass on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake at 120℃ for 35-40 minutes (to allow decarboxylation to take place)
  • Reduce the temperature to 93℃. Transfer the cannabis to a jar and pour the alcohol over it. Screw the lid on tightly and let stand for 20 minutes. Shake the jar every few minutes. This will create a cannabis tincture.
  • Strain the alcohol and cannabis mixture through a cheesecloth or coffee machine filter. You can throw the mass away.
  • Slowly stir the sugar into the alcohol. Spread the mixture evenly on as large a baking sheet as possible. Bake (carefully, in an electric oven only), stirring regularly until the alcohol has evaporated and the finished mixture is dry. Then let the sugar cool, crush and store in a sealable container.

Tips for the end

Watch the sugar in the oven. Alcohol is flammable, so don’t go anywhere and keep an eye on the oven. Or you can skip the last step and wait for the alcohol to evaporate at room temperature.

Don’t be alarmed by the green color. Cannabis comes in a variety of colours from yellow to green. It’s not necessarily an indicator of strength or quality, so don’t be afraid of unusual sugar colors.
